November 2026

The Optica-sponsored SUSSP Summer School in Artificial Intelligence for Photonics takes place in Stirling, Scotland, on 5–12 June 2027, with bursaries for PhD students. Registration closes on 8 January 2027; details are on our External Schools & Conferences page.

October 2026

The QU-ATTO network met at the Max Born Institute (MBI) in Berlin on 15–16 October 2026 for its 3rd Network Meeting. Doctoral candidates presented their latest results, and had a lab tour at MBI. The programme included an invited talk by Prof. Olga Smirnova, a workshop on scientific communication by Dr. Anders Ahlberg and a session on FAIR data management Dr. László Németh. Many thanks to our colleagues at MBI for hosting us!

September 2026

Light Conversion C5 GmbH in Hamburg is hiring a Project Leader for EUV & SXR Technology. The position suits researchers with hands-on experience in HHG sources, EUV/SXR beamlines, and attosecond science. Details are on our Job Opportunities page.

January 2026

On January 19, the QU-ATTO Doctoral Network held its Second Annual Meeting at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.
For the first time since the start of the project, all Doctoral Candidates and Supervisors gathered in person to present their research, exchange ideas, and discuss the overall progress of the Network.

The Winter QU-ATTO School on communication skills and public engagement successfully took place from 13–16 January at the Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia.
Doctoral candidates strengthened their ability to communicate science to non-expert audiences, practiced interactive facilitation, and gained hands-on experience in dialogue, inclusion, and creative engagement. During the school, they also received training on the Photonics Explorer Kit, developed by EYEST for secondary school students, which they will use in future outreach activities.

November 2025

The first QU-ATTO beamtimes at Elettra–FERMI have been successfully completed!

Five QU-ATTO doctoral candidates participated in their first beamtimes, which took place at the Low Density Matter (LDM) beamline and the Elastic and Inelastic Scattering (EIS) TIMER beamline hosted at FERMI; using attosecond pulses generated by the seeded free-electron laser, they investigated atoms, molecules, and thin films.
During these experiments, the doctoral candidates had the opportunity to meet and discuss with other PIs of the network, get to know each other, exchange ideas, and collaborate closely on their first joint research activities.

October 2025

The first virtual meeting of the QU-ATTO PhD students took place today!
A great opportunity for the doctoral candidates to meet each other, share their backgrounds, and start building connections across the network.
